Transkript Gerund and Infinitive – in Redewendungen (Übungsvideo)

Hello and welcome to this practice video that will help you decide how and when to use the gerund and when to use the infinitive in English. My name is Kati and I hope that you will enjoy today's lesson. Let's first spend a view seconds talking about what the difference between a gerund and an infinitive is. To make a gerund, you take an infinitive and add "ing" at the end. For example reading or cooking. And the infinitive is just the basic form of a verb like "to read" or "to cook". Gerunds and infinitives are used in some special phrases in English. If you feel that you have no idea about this topic, don't worry and watch the learning videos on first. If you know what we are talking about here, keep watching. Alright, let us start now with the practice. In the first exercise, translate the sentences from German to English: Um die Wahrheit zu sagen, ich habe kein Geld. To tell the truth, I don't have any money. In diesem Satz brauchst du also den Infinitiv "to tell" und die Redewendung lautet "to tell the truth". Offen gesagt, habe ich keine Ahnung von diesem Thema. To be frank, I have no idea about this topic Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn - es war eine schreckliche Präsentation. To cut a long story short, it was a horrible presentation. Es ist ein sehr schlechtes Auto. Es lohnt sich nicht, es zu kaufen. It's a really bad car. It's not worth buying. In diesem Satz verwendest du keinen Inifinitv, sondern ein Gerundium, "buying". Der Fairness halber ist sie nicht nur hübsch. Sie ist auch sehr intelligent. To be fair, she's not only beautiful. She's also very intelligent. Es macht keinen Sinn, dieses Buch zu lesen. There's no point reading this book. Good. Now let's go to exercise 2. Choose the correct alternative in every sentence. The first will be an example: She wasted a lot of time trying/to try to find her top. The correct answer is: She wasted a lot of time trying to find her top. How about getting/to get a coffee? How about getting a coffee. Being/To be honest, I hate sport. To be honest, I hate sport. I can't stand talking/to talk to him. I can't stand talking to him. In the morning, she's always busy reading/to read a newspaper. In the morning, she's always busy reading a newspaper. Being/To be frank, I hated that dinner. To be frank, I hated that dinner. Telling/To tell the truth, I don't like shopping very much. To tell the truth, I dont linke shopping very much. And one last sentence: I spend so much time writing/to write emails and letters. I spend so much time writing emails and letters. Well done! How are you feeling now? I'm sure you have improved your English in the past five minutes. Have a nice day and see you next time. Bye! Bye!

    Falsche Wortstellung:
Der Fairness halber, ist sie nicht nur hübsch, sie ist auch intelligent.
    Es muss heissen:
Der Fairness halber, sie ist nicht nur hübsch, sie ist auch intelligent.
