Transkript False Friends – Falsche Freunde (1)

Hi, my name is Camilla, and I come from England. Have you ever had a friend who's nice to your face but laughes at you as soon as you turn your back. That is a false friend. And this video is about false friends in the english language. In this video I'll only be speaking englisch. So it's propably a good idea to have a dictionary ready for any words you don't know. So, let me give you an example for a false friend in the english language. The word gift in english. Sounds exactly like the word Gift auf Deutsch, but careful, they don't mean the same thing. Gift in english means Geschenk auf Deutsch. And Gift auf Deutsch means poison in english. I'm now going to show you a whole lot of false friends. So you can kick them right out of your life. Yes. So let's start. Actually and aktuell. They look like they're friends holding hands, but no. Actually means tatsächlich oder wirklich and aktuell means topical or current in english. What about these, all loved up. Meinung und Meaning, Map und Mappe. But do they really love each other? No, of course not. Meaning means Bedeutung und Meinung is opinion in english. Map in english ist Landkarte auf Deutsch und Mappe auf Deutsch is folder in english. Ooooh, what a beautiful couple. Decent and dezent. But they don't actually fit together. Decent means anständig oder ordentlich auf Deutsch und dezent is actually descreet when translated into english. Hm, this looks like a pretty easy translation. Murder und Mörder, but watch out. Murder in english heißt Mord auf Deutsch und Mörder auf Deutsch heißt murderer in english. Oooh, two lovely pairs, sensible and sensibel. Spend and spenden. But that's not true. They don't mean the same. Sensible in english ist vernünftig auf Deutsch and sensibel auf Deutsch ist sensitive in english. Spend is ausgeben and spenden auf Deutsch ist to donate in english. Aaah, yes, as a monkey loves bananas. Consequent and konsequent should also fit together. The same as the donkey and carrots, nicht müssen und must not. But, oh-oh, consequent in english has the meaning of folglich oder resultierend und konsequent auf Deutsch ist consistent in english. Nicht müssen heißt eigentlich not to have to und must not in english ist nicht dürfen auf Deutsch. Okay, now it's time for a little test. In these five sentences there are false friends, one in each sentence. So, listen first of all to the sentences und see if you can identify which words are false friends. Number 1: I will eventually come to the cinema, if I get my homework done. Number 2: To find the bathroom, walk along the floor until you see the sign. Number 3: Mary is very engaged to her charity work. Number 4: Can I have some cheese-and-onion-flavoured chips please? Number 5: Tracey and her mum went on a shopping trip to the warehouse. Hm, these sentences look okay, but they're not. Here are the false friends. Eventually, floor, engaged to, chips and warehouse. Eventually in english is translated as schließlich oder endlich, but it's often confused with eventuell, which means possibly. Floor in german is Boden, but sometimes it gets confused with Flur in german, which is hall in english. Engaged to heißt eigentlich verlobt auf Deutsch. But engagiert sein auf Deutsch is to be committed to in english. Chips in english is Pommes auf Deutsch and Chips auf Deutsch are crisps in english. Warehouse is actually a Lagerhaus auf Deutsch, but it sounds a lot like Warenhaus auf Deutsch, which is department store in english. So, as you can see there are a lot of false friends in the english language. There are also a few more that I haven't had time to mention today but I'm sure you can find them out yourself. So, remember to keep your eyes open and know who your real friends are, you don't want any of those false friends around. Okay, take care and see you soon. Bye.
